Hot One Inch Action Show

Last night was my first time down to the Hot One Inch Action button show (6th Ever show). Always good when I get a chance to hang out with the talented Atomos. Glad I was able to submit a piece for the show and it was excepted.

These are the pieces I liked the most out of the 50 artists in the show (personal taste). There weren't as many “bangers” as I would have liked, but maybe next year. It might be cool to have more in the range of 150 artist in a show at once although I’m sure it would be a logistical nightmare. ^__^

The Little Book of Kawaii

After a year of waiting the first of 2 books (...well actually the second, but the first one isn't out yet) with some of my characters and toy designs just landed on my doorstep yesterday. Titled: The little book of kawaii, is 400 page and jammed with some of the hottest character and toy designers from around the world. Put together by Shawn Wright and He Li, it's the fresh injection of sugary cuteness you need for your collection.

TACO BELL IN DEEP HOT SAUCE!
There's trouble brewing in the Urban Vinyl world. An image (Right) posted on August 31 of the new promotional toys from TACO BELL has ignited the vinyl toy community online. A clear example of mainstream trying to jump on the Urban Vinyl scene without even an attempt toward originality. Response image posted by Kidrobot (Left). Check out the details on the links and follow on Twitter.

Kidrobot's KRonikle
Vinyl Pulse

Death to False Vinyl rally tomorrow, September 4th in NYC on the corner of Houston and Lafayette from 11:30 to 1:30.

Wish I could be there to see it all go down.

The passing of a friend...

Leo Obstbaum "passed away unexpectedly" on Thursday night at his home.

My condolences to the Obstbaum family. Leo was a great person to have known personally. I've had some great conversations with Leo about characters and life. He will be missed.

Mod Nation Racers.

So today at E3 UFG debuted their Cart racing game Mod Nation Racers. I worked with the key members of the team bringing my 'vinyl artist' flav to the mix.

I retooled the figure to be more "Urban Vinyl", coached the car modelers on caricature 101, did interface design exploration and just a couple of week ago was asked to take a stab at designing some ideas for the lead character which ended up being used the demo the game at during the Sony presentation. (That's the red goggles guy)
The UFG crew is awesome and ridiculously talented. This was a great project for me as it is really true to the idea of vinyl toys and character creation, two things I love. I feel very fortunate to have been asked to contribute. I can't wait to actually play the game.

More details coming soon...

Gobot5 Reveal!

One of the dominant undertones of Japanese anime films and manga is the search to define what it mean to be human many of which feature robots finding there way in an organic world. GoBot5 pays tribute to that journey.

Created by Mother One, GoBot5 was design for the ‘soul’ purpose of exploring the living world and to gather data that will enable robots to become more human.

Playing in the Mud...

Although I'll be the first to tell you I'm a MODO lover through and through, there is another sculpting app that makes 3D life worth living, Mudbox. After being reminded by Steve Talkowski aka Sketchbot, I DL'd the 30 day trile copy of the new version of Mudbox from Autodesk yesterday to try it out. It had been a while since I'd played with Mudbox and I wanted to see what was new.

Now, as I'm a cute, cool, Japanesey robot, design type guy, this is far from the stuff I normally do, but I do have an inner love for alien beings and I thought it would be fun to throw my tests up for those of you interested in seeing the progress.
Once I got my bearings, I started pushing things around. The tools are simple and easy to figure out. At some point the shape reminded me of movies like Enemy Mines and the alien race from The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension... John Big Booty...hehe (oh and I'm sure there's a little Cardassian and Kamen Rider in there too). As this was just exploration, I didn't use any reference images from the a fore mentioned films, so they are more of a soft bounce, but they'll serve as my rationale...for now.

This took about 3 - 4 hours to this point and there's still a lot of detailing to do. The back needs way more definition and then I'll move to texture and then Paint. I'll post updates as they happen.

Feedback is always welcome.

*Note: Love that fact it looks like chocolate. d^_^b

First Chibi exclusives...

Here's a look at the first Chibi Charms that was created for a client in NYC name Daruma Asset Managment Inc. I'm mean really, with a name like Daruma how could you not want one of these little guys. Drauma was also a big supporter of the Dreams to Dream show in LA at JANM back in December. BIG thanks to them for helping to make that happen. The design is titled 'Satoi' which translates in this use to 'Being able to discern the true meaning' and speaks to the old world explorers and traders navigating the seas, reading and following the trade winds. The pattern represents the wind. if you look closely at the packaging, you'll find a small butterfly which represents the element of chaos. I think the design came out great!

Back at you soon...

A little 3D...
Here's a little piece of my robot project. This guy is part of one of my robot's mode themes or "Skins" as I've dubbed them. I have no where near the skill level in 3D as my good friend Sketchbot aka Steve Talkowski, or Yoshii, but I'm working on my chops every chance I get. My goal is that before the end of the year I can draw up a character and pump it out in sexy 3D super fast.

DCTO Chibi Charms...

Hey Guys, This is a long overdue update on the SOOP projects.

A lot of people have been asking about the small versions of DCTO and when they are coming out. Well... The DCTO "Chibi Charms" are on there way. I've teamed up with Adfunture to produce the 8cm/3inch pieces. Below is a photo of the prototype in front of the OG version.
This project will be a collaboration. I fired off 9 emails and got 9 "I'm downs with the Chibi project" back. The 10 luck colour artist series line is: Dacosta! (me), Cameron, MAD, Charuca, Touma, leo Espinosa, Julie West, Itokin Park, Jesse Hernandez and Bulpa.
Each designer worked their special brand of magic and I can't to see them out there.

Back shortly with another update...
